Updated: Jun 20, 2018
Scratch ~~ light up a match. Then close your eyes and clear your mind by concentrating on the floral fragrance drifting with the wind. The Japanese design studio TRUNK DESIGN has designed “Hibi” (日々), the “Incense Matches”, which light up to emit various natural aromas to provide a 10-minute-a-day genuine happiness for busy urbanites. The Japanese word “hibi” (日々) means every day. The logo on the matchbox is composed of two “Japanese Kanji” characters 日日, each of which means a day. It conveys the designer’s theme of hoping to bring the memory of igniting a match, a long forgotten ordinary event, back into everyday life again.

When lighting up a match is about to become a collective memory and gathering dust in new poems and pop musical lyrics, the Japanese design studio TRUNK DESIGN has designed “Hibi” (日々), the “Incense Matches”, which light up to emit various natural aromas for 10 minutes. They are trying to re-introduce this old craftsmanship into our modern daily life again. Mr Horiuchi, the President of the company, cannot bear to see so many traditional craftsmanships gradually dwindling towards non-existence. He constantly visits the existing factories, looks for everyday objects with traditional values, and when he finds the right craft he tries to revive its production with modern creativity and designs. To revive this old traditional craft his way took three years, starting from conception, and experimentation to a finished product. With an unconstrained spirit of innovation, Mr. Horiuchi combines the characteristics of a matchstick with an incense stick. By doing so he has revived simultaneously two traditional crafts and has re-established their niches in our modern daily lives.
Japanese have been using incense burning as a way to produce aroma for a long time. Unlike the Western-style aromatherapy of using various kinds of oil, the Japanese-way of incense burning produces aroma with the smoky paint-like haze, hanging in the air. It is therapeutic because the combination of the aroma and the hazy smoke tickles one’s imagination, inducing stress release in this form of relaxation. After the Heian era, in addition to being used for religious ceremonies, Kōdō has begun to be developed as a form of aesthetics, and the incense burning rituals gradually have evolved into the unique ritual of Japan.
There are many brands of Japanese incense, and the incense ingredients of hibi Incense matches come from the Daihatsu Corporation of Awaji shima. This old store has a history of nearly 80 years. It is different from many traditional old incense stores. Daihatsu has always been brave to innovate. Early in its establishment, it tried to mix French perfume with its incense to try to secure a new breakthrough.
In addition, hibi's "Matchstick" is from a match making company, Kobe Match Co., Ltd., which is located in Harima, Hyogo Prefecture. Kobe Match was established in 1929 and once had a Japanese match market share as high as 70%. Unfortunately, matches have gradually been replaced by lighters and sales are declining every year. In recent years, Kobe Match has repeatedly launched new projects, such as reprint matches or T-Shirts made of classic Totem printing. It has begun to turn around and has become a new trend of reviving the old tradition that is favored by both adults and children alike.
As long as you carry two hibi matchboxes, you will be able to light a fragrance with your heart. The choices of aroma range from Rosa banksiae, fresh citronella, lavender, geranium, ylang-ylang and tea tree etc. You have to admire the designer’s ingenious creativity. To release your stress and to pause your busy day you can light up one of these matches at your leisure; stare at the burning incense, which is like a
