The Soul Carver - Marble Print & Clay
Updated: Jul 7, 2018
We have more or less heard about the screen printing of Andy Warhol, the ukiyo-e of Japan and the type printing of ancient China. However, do you know that they all belong to the art of printmaking? Located in the Kwun Tong factory area, Marble Print & Clay Studio (MPC) is the only private studio in Hong Kong that engages in the art print of Artist Print. MPC offers a variety of printmaking services, specializing in the creation of prints provided by artists. This time, I followed the TARTEz team to witness MPC's print project jointly planned by TARTEz and Hong Kong designers, Benny Au. I also interviewed the two souls of MPC, David Jasper Wong & Bambi Lam. By understanding the art of printmaking we are learning about the fascination and meaning of prints and printmaking.

Marble Print & Clay的誕生，緣於L.A. Bambi。 David, a Hong Kong resident, who returned from L.A. and Bambi, a young printmaker are the two artists who founded Marble Print & Clay.
"It is not easy to engage in any form of art activities in a small place like Hong Kong. It takes more courage to run a professional art printmaking studio."
"Fortunately, our enthusiasm for printmaking has not vanished like a puff of smoke. On the contrary, it has unleashed an unexpected spark of cooperation that has motivated us to take it to our heart to work even harder to build the brand of MPC, changing ordinary people’s conviction that printmaking is a cheap form of art that is less valuable."
When I walked into the studio of MPC the prints of different styles and sizes on the wall came into view. What is printmaking? The art of printmaking uses different materials as the media, such as wood, copper and stone, etc. to reproduce the original "version". After the original “version” is made, multiple copies of the work are created using the copy technique. However, each copy is by itself a new art creation because pluralism, the characteristic of printmaking has been applied in the creation process, so that the same creation can be displayed to people across time and space. This feature makes the price of prints more affordable, especially for beginners at the starting point of collecting art. Despite this, the craftsmanship in printmaking cannot be measured by the price alone, because printmaking is very time-consuming and each procedure requires exact precision.
In order to let the public know more about the art of printmaking, MPC has worked with Sensory Zero located in Elites at Taikoo Place more than half a year to make copper etching and Water Marbling hanging prints. MPC also has hosted a Modern Print Biennial of Hong Kong, which showcases the works of art of the studio and various art units. Artists who have worked with MPC include designer Benny AU, illustrator Don MAK, and others. The recently completed project of MPC is to create a series of large-scale woodblock prints for a big project, New 9 Sins, created by designer Tommy Li, comic artist Li Chi-Tak and photographer Ringo Tang. In this project the photographic works combined with the giant woodcut patterns enhance the shock and awe visual effect for the viewers, who find the combination original with its lasting and lingering charm.
When asked how to appreciate art prints, we were told that prints can be divided into four categories: letterpress, gravure, lithograph and silkscreen. With the development of the new technology of graphic arts, new technology can also be combined with traditional prints, incorporating laser printing, film and other technologies into the scope of traditional prints. The letterpress printing is like woodcutting, and the image protruding from the layout will be inked. After embossing or rubbing, the image will be subtly transferred onto the paper. And copper etching is a kind of gravure. On that day David of MPC demonstrated the photo etching method by printing an Art Print selected from an art series of designer Benny Au called “WordSpotting”. This Art Print project is jointly curated by Benny Au and TARTEz. David first applied the preservative to the copper plate to form an anti-corrosion film. After the lines were scribed, he then placed the plate in acid to let it corrode. The image was corroded in a concave formation and the longer the corrosion time, the deeper the lines that formed the new image.
David and Bambi have stated that making prints is actually more challenging than using other media for art creation. "Unlike painting, printmaking has more rationality and objectivity, with relatively less individuality for the room of expression of the printmaking artist. As a printmaking studio, MPC's production is known for its standard of precision and planning. The works they produce need to meet the requirements of the artists, who have definite goals." Of course, the process of making prints will bring some accidental surprises. Sometimes an unexpected inspiration can make the art creators try the creation process again, striving for more improvement. On their journey in the art of printmaking, they have found that printmaking is not just a work of art, but also in the creation process the artist could have a better and deeper understanding of his or her personality. In addition, MPC values the communication and trust by the artists, who give them assignments and they are welcomed to come to the studio to work together so that the printmakers can better understand the artist's ideas and the artists can experience the printing process together.
For those who are interested in printmaking, you can take part in Marble Print & Clay's Printmaking Hand-on Lessons (wood or copper etching), which let the participants understand the print creation and let them experience the making process in person. With these hand-on experiences it is hoped that participants can better understand and appreciate the low-profile working ethic of the studio, giving them little more nutrients for their growth. You can also take your work home and integrate the beautiful prints with other beautiful things in into your life.
